Demidow ( Russian Демидов ) is a small town in the Smolensk Oblast ( Russia ) with 7333 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The city is located about 90 kilometers northwest of the Oblasthauptstadt Smolensk at the mouth of the river Gobsa in the Kasplya River , a left tributary of the Daugava .

Demidow is the administrative center of the Rajons of the same name .

history

The place was first mentioned in 1499 under the name Poretschje , which in Russian simply indicates the location along a river.

At the beginning of the 18th century the village came into the possession of the Tsar's court ; In 1723 Peter the Great had a dock for merchant ships built. In 1776 Poretschje received city rights. At the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th century, the city was an important hub for hemp and flax fibers , grain and other goods between central Russia and the Baltic States.

In 1918 the city was renamed Demidow after the chairman of the District Committee of the Communist Party of Russia (Bolsheviks) , Jakow Demidow (1889-1918) .

During the Second World War Demidow was occupied by the German Wehrmacht on July 13, 1941 and recaptured on September 22, 1943 by troops of the Kalininer Front of the Red Army as part of the Duchowschtschina-Demidow operation . During the occupation, the Grischin partisan brigade was active in the forests of Demidow.

Culture and sights

In Demidow, the Assumption Cathedral ( Успенский собор / Uspenski sobor) from 1852 and the Church of the Protection and Intercession of the Virgin Mary ( Покровская церковь / Pokrowskaja zerkow) from 1857 have been preserved.

The city has a history and local museum .

In the Przhevalskoye settlement (formerly Kimborowo , also Kimbory ) there is a Przhevalsky Museum on the explorer's former estate.

There are more than 30 larger lakes in Demidow Raion and the adjacent Duchowschtschina Raion , the largest of which is Lake Akatovskoye . In this area of 146,237 hectares in 1992 National Park Smolenskoje Poosjorje ( Smolensk lakes ) established, which since 2002 as biosphere reserve is classified and international importance as Vogeldurchzugs- and resting area has. The park's administration is located in Przhevalskoye.
