Duchowschtschina ( Russian Духовщина ) is a small town in the Smolensk Oblast ( Russia ) with 4,371 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The city is located in the western part of the Smolensker Heights about 60 kilometers northeast of the Oblast capital Smolensk on the river Vostitsa in the river system of the Dnieper .

Duchowschtschina is the administrative center of the raion of the same name .

history

In place of the current city, the Holy Spirit Monastery (Russian Duchow monastyr ) existed since the 13th or beginning of the 14th century , around which a trading settlement called Duchowskaja Sloboda existed in the 15th century .

From the second half of the 17th century the village belonged to the court of the tsars .

In 1777 the town charter was granted under its current name. The city burned down during the Napoleonic invasion in 1812.

During the Second World War , Duchowschtschina was occupied by the Wehrmacht on July 15, 1941 and was recaptured on September 19, 1943 by troops of the Kalinin Front of the Red Army as part of the Duchowschtschina-Demidow operation . The city was badly damaged during the fighting.

Culture and sights

In 1995 a new Church of the Holy Spirit ( Церковь Святого Духа / zerkow Swjatowo Ducha), named after the city's name, was built.

The city has a history and local museum .

In the village Bassino which is the Annunciation Church ( Благовещенская церковь / Blagoweschtschenskaja Zerkow) received in 1814, in the village Welisto the Virgin Birth Church ( церковь Рождества Богородицы / Zerkow Roschdestwa Bogoroditsy) of 1828 and in the village Sagussinje the Assumption Ascension Church ( Успенская церковь / Uspenskaja zerkow) from 1785 preserved.

There is a Russian war cemetery in Dukhovshchina.

The German war cemetery in Duchowschtschina was created as a collective cemetery by the Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge . The reburial work began in 2010. Until the official inauguration on August 3, 2013, 30,000 dead had been buried or reburied at the facility designed for 70,000 fallen soldiers.

There are companies in the food and wood industries in Duchovshchina.

The Smolensk Thermal Power Plant (Smolenskaya GRES) operated by OGK-4 is located near Osjorny in the north of the Rajon .
