Verkhnedneprovski ( Russian Верхнеднепро́вский ) is an urban-type settlement in Smolensk Oblast ( Russia ) with 12,969 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010). It is not to be confused with the small town of Verkhnyodniprovsk in Ukraine , in Russian Verkhnedneprovsk.
geography
The settlement is a good 80 km as the crow flies east-northeast of the Smolensk Oblast Administrative Center , about 2 km from the right bank of the Dnieper .
Werchnedneprowski belongs to the Dorogobusch Rajon and is located about 8 km northeast of its administrative center Dorogobusch . The settlement forms a municipality (gorodskoje posselenije), to which no other localities belong.
history
The place arose from 1952 in connection with the construction of the thermal power station Dorogobusch (Dorogobuschskaja GRES), initially as a residential area for the construction workers, later for the employees. On June 14, 1956, Verkhnedneprovsky received urban-type settlement status. The place name refers to the location on the upper (Russian werchni ) Dnepr. The power plant went into operation in 1957; Between 1963 and 1965 a fertilizer factory was established as another large enterprise .

Sports
North-east of Werchnedneprovski, the Smolenskoje Kolzo (Smolenskring) racetrack has been in operation since 2010 and has hosted the Russian Touring Car Championship and the European Truck Racing Championship .
Economy and Infrastructure
Establishing companies are the power plant, now known as Dorogobuschskaja TEZ , with an output of 149 MW, and the fertilizer plant, one of the largest in Russia, which is now owned by the Russian market leader Acron . There is also a boiler and building materials factory.
The nearest railway station with passenger traffic is in Safonowo about 15 km north, on the Moscow - Smolensk railway line . From there, a freight connection route leads to the industrial plants near Verkhnedneprovsky ( Azotnaya station near the fertilizer factory, route km 21).
There is a road connection via the regional road R137 Safonowo - Dorogobusch - Jelnja - Roslavl , which runs past the settlement to the west , including the M1 near Safonowo.
