Chislawitschi ( Russian Хисла́вичи ) is an urban-type settlement in Smolensk Oblast in Russia with 4138 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The place is about 70 km as the crow flies south of the Smolensk Oblast Administrative Center on the right bank of the Sosh River , a good 20 km from the state border with Belarus .
Chislawitschi is the administrative center of the Chislawitschski Rajons and the seat of the municipality Chislawitschskoje gorodskoje posselenije, which also includes the settlements Frolowo (3 km north-northeast) and Kirpitschny Sawod ("brick factory", 3 km north).
history
The place was first mentioned in 1526 under the name Choslawitschi . From the end of the 18th century the place belonged to the Ujesd Mstislavl of the Mogiljow governorate . Chislavichi was one of the larger shtetl in the region with a Jewish population of around 80% at the turn of the 20th century. During this time the current form of the name became official.
In 1928 Chislavichi became the administrative seat of a newly created Rajons named after him. During the Second World War , the place was occupied by the German Wehrmacht from July 16, 1941 to September 26, 1943 . In the first months after the occupation there was a ghetto for the Jewish population, who were murdered or deported on site until the beginning of 1942.
In 1965 the Chislavichi received urban-type settlement status.

Chislawitschi is on the regional road 66A-2, which branches off the federal highway R120 Oryol - Bryansk - Smolensk almost 30 km northeast of the neighboring district center Pochinok and continues to the Belarusian border (from there towards Mzislau - Mahiljou ). To the northwest, the 66K-25 branches off to Monastyrschtschina , to the south the 66K-19 to Shumyachi .
The nearest train station on the Bryansk - Smolensk line is in Pochinok.
