The Sosh ( Russian , Ukrainian , Belarusian Сож ) is a river in Russia , Belarus, and Ukraine . It rises in the Smolensk Heights , 8 km south of Smolensk and flows into the Dnieper after 648 km from the left . In the upper reaches, the river marks the border between Russia and Belarus for a short section. In Belarus it flows through Homel , the country's second largest city. On the last 25 km of its course, up to its confluence with the Dnepr about 60 km south of Homel, it forms the Belarusian-Ukrainian state border .
