During the Second World War , Cholm-Schirkowski was occupied by the German Wehrmacht from the beginning of October 1941 until it was recaptured by the Red Army on March 15, 1943 in the final phase of the Battle of Rzhev , during the German retreat known as the "Operation Buffalo Movement" .

In 1971, Cholm-Zhirkovsky received urban-type settlement status.
