The M1 on the highway network of the Soviet Union

The M1 is a trunk road in Russia . It was part of the highway network of the Soviet Union .

The M1 is part of European route 30 and thus one of the most important road links in Russia, as it connects the Russian capital Moscow with Western Europe. In the Asian trunk road network , it is part of AH 6 . Today it is called "Belarus" in Russia because it connects Moscow with Belarus. During the Barbarossa operation , it was known as the runway .

The M1 runs from the west side of the Moscow Kremlin via Vozdwischenka Street, New Arbat and Kutuzov Prospect, crossing the Moscow ring road in a westerly direction out of the capital. Within the Moscow Oblast , it leads through the Moscow suburb of Odintsovo past Moshaisk into the Smolensk Oblast . The M1 runs past Vyazma , Safonowo and Smolensk to the Belarusian border at Krasnoye .
