The R256 Tschuiski trakt ( Russian Чуйский тракт , Tschuiski trakt ; "Tschujatrakt") is a trunk road in southwestern Siberia in Russia . It leads from the metropolis of Novosibirsk in a southerly direction via Barnaul to Gorno-Altaisk and then to the southeast through the Altai Mountains to Taschanta on the Mongolian border.

The name Tschujatrakt refers to the Tschuja , a tributary of the Katun , in whose valley the road crosses the Altai from the estuary above Inja . Trakt is the traditional Russian name for trunk or originally post roads.

The road was given the number R256 in 2010. Before that, it was numbered M52.
