List of cities in Russia |
Berdsk ( Russian Бердск ) is a city with 97,296 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010) in the Novosibirsk Oblast in Russia . It is located about 30 km south of the regional capital Novosibirsk , at the mouth of the Berd River (Russian Бердь) in the Ob (Russian Обь). The closest town is Iskitim , 18 km southeast of Berdsk.
history
The exact date of origin of the city is not known; the emergence of a first settlement at this point is believed to have taken place between 1713 and 1718, when the Russians advancing eastwards built a fortress (so-called Ostrog ). Thus Berdsk is much older than the much better known capital of Novosibirsk Oblast. The origin of the place name is also not exactly known, but could possibly be taken from the Tatar language .
In addition to the purely military use of the fortress, there was already brisk trade in the 18th century, which was driven by settlers who had moved from European Russia. This was also favored by the location of the Ostrog between the metropolises of Omsk , Tomsk and Kuznetsk and on the road to Moscow . In place of the former fortress, a settlement of traders and craftsmen called Possad was formed , which at times was called Kolyvan (Колывань) and was even declared the capital of an independently formed governorate at the end of the 18th century . Very soon, however, the further development of the Possad was discarded, among other things because there was fear of major flooding of the Ob. Berdsk was annexed to the Tobolsk governorate and lost all economic importance. In the 19th century it was a village that played a role primarily in grain processing and agriculture.
The place only got a new development in the 1950s, a few years after it was granted city status in 1944. Due to the construction of the hydropower plant near Novosibirsk and the resulting formation of the Novosibirsk reservoir below the city, Berdsk had to be relocated. For this reason, the buildings were moved about eight kilometers to a new location between 1954 and 1957. Nowadays there is only a small part of the city where the Berd meets the Ob, the core and the rest of Berdsk are not directly on the bank. All historical buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries have also been lost through the implementation of the city.

Economy and Transport
During the Soviet era , Berdsk's industry was essentially symbolized by three large-scale plants - a radio plant, an electromechanical plant, and a chemical plant. The last two successfully weathered the economic collapse after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. There are also some companies from the food industry.
Berdsk is connected to the north of Akademgorodok , Novosibirsk and other cities both by a trunk road ( M52 from Novosibirsk to the Altai Republic ) and by a railway line (Novosibirsk– Barnaul section ).
