The 363 km long Berd ( Russian Бердь , fem. ) Is a right tributary of the Ob on the southeast edge of the West Siberian lowlands ( Russia , Asia ).

course

The Berd rises on the main ridge of the Salair ridge in the Kemerovo Oblast at an altitude of 440  m and immediately afterwards reaches the territory of the Altai region . At first it flows - mostly on the territory of the Novosibirsk Oblast - in a wide valley meandering in western to northwestern directions and finally flows into the Ob at Berdsk , which is dammed up here to form the Novosibirsk reservoir (water level at 113  m ). The backwater up the Berd, the Berdbucht ( Бердский залив / Berdski saliw), has a length of about 40 km (to Iskitim ) and a width of up to 3 km. The length of the Berd before the Novosibirsk Reservoir was built was 416 km.

Hydrography

The catchment area of the Berd covers 8,650 km². At Iskitim, 40 km from the estuary, the mean water flow is 45.8 m³ / s (minimum in February with 10.9 m³ / s, maximum in May with 183 m³ / s). Above the confluence with the Novosibirsk Reservoir, the river is about 75 m wide and 1.7 m deep, the flow velocity is 0.5 m / s. The main tributaries from the right are Suenga ( Суэнга ) and Ik ( Ик ).

The berd freezes from early November to mid-April.

Economy and Infrastructure

The Berd is not navigable, but was previously used for logging.

12 km above the settlement of Masljanino , near the village of Perebor, a small reservoir with a hydroelectric power station was built between 1947 and 1951, following a decision made in 1934 . The power plant had an output of 600  kilowatts . Until it was connected to the nationwide power grid, the system served to supply the Rajons with electricity, after which it was dismantled. However, the dam ( ) has been preserved.

The industrial cities of Iskitim and Berdsk lie on the Berd, where the river is crossed by the Novosibirsk - Barnaul railway and the M52 Novosibirsk – Mongolian border ( Chuja tract ).
