Ob ( Russian Обь ) is a city in Novosibirsk Oblast ( Russia ) with 25,382 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The city is located in the southeastern part of the West Siberian lowlands , about 15 km west of the Oblast capital Novosibirsk , but not directly on the Ob River , after which it was named. The climate is continental.
The city of Ob is directly subordinate to the Oblast.
Immediately northwest of the city is the Novosibirsk-Tolmachovo Airport .
history
The village of Tolmachowo was built near the present-day town around 1850, and a settlement of the same name at the train station towards the end of the 19th century in connection with the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway . In 1934 the name was changed to Ob, which became an urban-type settlement in 1947 and received town charter in 1969.
