Barabinsk ( Russian Бара́бинск ) is a city in the Novosibirsk Oblast ( Russia ) with 30,394 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

Barabinsk is located in a steppe area, the Barabasteppe (Russian Барабинская степь / Barabinskaja step ) with an extension of 117,000 km², which extends between the rivers Irtysh and Ob in the southeast of the West Siberian lowlands , and is named after this. The city is located about 300 kilometers west of the oblast capital Novosibirsk .

Ten kilometers north of Barabinsk is the somewhat larger town of Kuibyshev on the Om River , which later flows into the Irtysh near Omsk .

Barabinsk is the administrative center of the Barabinsk Raion of the same name .

history

Barabinsk was established in 1893 as a station settlement in connection with the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway . Operations on this section began in 1896.

City rights were granted as early as 1917.

Economy and Infrastructure

Barabinsk railway station

Barabinsk is an important station on the Trans-Siberian Railway (3035 km from Moscow ) with a large locomotive depot.

In addition to extensive railway workshops (locomotive and wagon repairs), there are companies in the city in the food and building materials industries.

The M51 trunk road from Chelyabinsk to Novosibirsk, part of the trans-Siberian road connection, bypasses Barabinsk to the south on this section a few years ago .
