It is a slightly hilly forest steppe plain with an area of 117,000 km². She takes the western part of Novosibirsk Oblast and the east of the Omsk Oblast one goes to the north into the swamp of Vasyugan Swamp and in the south in the Kulunda steppes over. The steppe is crossed in its central part by the Trans-Siberian Railway (section Omsk - Novosibirsk ). The Barabasteppe is 100 to 150  m above sea level.

vegetation

In particular, the south of the Barabasteppe is characterized by parallel, elongated elevations running in west-east directions, called Griwy ( singular : Griwa ). These elevations are covered with grass steppe, which is interrupted by birch forests . Black earth soils are widespread . The lowlands lying between the elevations, some of which have no drainage, are often taken up by lakes, such as the salty Tschanysee , the Ubinskojesee and the Sartlansee . Sphagnum swamps and salt marshes are characteristic of the lowlands .

use

The Barabasteppe is one of the most important agricultural areas in Siberia. In particular arable and dairy farming are practiced. The reclamation began in the 18th century, from the second half of the 19th century and especially from the 1930s through meliorative measures, u. a. Drainage of swamps and lakes, intensified. Today, most of the Barabasteppe is taken up by fields and pastures, while the original vegetation has been greatly pushed back.
