biography

Martschenko was born the son of a railroad worker in Barabinsk , Siberia . After eight years, he left school and was a member of the Komsomol . Marchenko worked as a construction worker building hydropower plants and was arrested for the first time. After an attempt to escape to Iran in 1960, he was imprisoned again from 1960 to 1966, at times in the Vladimir Central Prison . He wrote about this in the book My Statements , published in New York and Frankfurt / Main in 1969 .

He became a political dissident. Among other things, he was a founding member of the Moscow Helsinki Group and warned the Czechoslovaks against the Soviets, which earned him another punishment. The KGB offered him to emigrate to Israel , which he refused because his wife was Jewish, but he was not. Because of his exile report from Tarussa to Tschunski , he was sent to prison UE148 / 2 in Tschistopol in 1981 , where he died in early December 1986 after a brain hemorrhage. He had been sentenced six times and served 19 years in prison.

Marchenko was the second husband of Larissa Bogoras . He was posthumously honored with the Sakharov Prize in 1988.
