The R242 ( Russian Р242 ) is a trunk road of federal importance in Russia . The 354 km long road connecting the Ural and its western foothills, the million cities Perm , administrative center of the region of the same name , and Yekaterinburg , the center of the Sverdlovsk Oblast . In doing so, it crosses the border between Europe and Asia at Pervouralsk, which is considered to be the watershed that runs along the Ural ridge in this area .

The R242 follows the main line of the Trans-Siberian Railway for the first quarter of its route between Perm and Kungur , then continues south  to follow the Moscow  - Kazan -Yekaterinburg railway on its second half, starting east of the city of Krasnokamsk . It is part of the European route 22 from Holyhead in the United Kingdom to Ishim in the western Siberian Oblast of Tyumen .

The entire length of the road is paved and mostly two-lane, but on short sections from Perm and before Yekaterinburg it is also six- or four-lane and motorway-like . In the renewed bypass of Suksun , the road has two lanes in one direction uphill in order to be able to overtake there more safely. However, there is no structural separation of the lanes in the different directions either.
