Ischim ( Russian Иши́м ; scientific transliteration : Išim ) is a Russian city ​​in the West Siberian Oblast Tyumen with 65,243 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

Geographical location

The city is located around 300 kilometers southeast of the regional capital Tyumen on the Ishim River and directly on the route of the Trans-Siberian Railway ( kilometer 2428 ). Ischim became the end point of the route in 2002 when the European route 22 was extended into the Asian part of the Russian Federation.

climate

The city has climatic conditions typical for Siberia. In winter the air temperature reaches down to −48 ° C; in summer, however, sometimes up to 42 ° C. The exits of the houses can be blocked in heavy snow and lock the population in. A Buran wind can occur in winter as well as in summer and possibly cause damage. The climatic conditions can temporarily paralyze the city's transport and electricity network. Melting snow in the spring and weeks of rain in the summer cause u. a. for large floods.

history

Ishim was founded in the second half of the 17th century as a trading post Korkina sloboda (Коркина слобода) on the Ishim River. In 1782 the settlement was expanded into a city on the instructions of Catherine the Great . It was given city rights and its current name. During the Russian Civil War , Ischim was the center of the Siberian peasant uprising in 1921. During the Second World War , several plants from European Russia were relocated to the city.

Culture and sights

Apparition Cathedral (1775-1814) is a cultural monument of national importance and an architectural monument of Siberian Baroque .

The cityscape of Ischim is characterized by multi-storey log houses. Communist monuments, such as those of Lenin , can be found in many places within the city. A large part of the population owns their own dachas or gardens outside the city . Ischim has a beach on the river of the same name, where people bathe in summer. The modern city in Siberia offers discos, concert halls, cinemas, video stores, museums, theaters and cultural centers.

Ischim is a center of the textile and food industry. Meat products are processed in the "Mjasokombinat", sweets are made in the confectionery factory and several bakeries provide baked goods. The Ischimer brewery produces several types of beer and drinks .

There are about 13 elementary and secondary schools, technical colleges , among others for education, medicine or agriculture, as well as branches of some Tyumen universities.

The city's unemployment rate is very low, and in contrast to the Soviet era, when there was a shortage of goods, you can now buy anything in the city's countless shops.

The Trans-Siberian Railway runs through the city from Moscow to Beijing . Chinese traders, who regularly stop at Ishim station on their trip to Moscow, sell clothes and electronics from the train. They are mostly cheaper plagiarism.

Ischim is the eastern end of European route 22 .
