The A121 Sortavala ( Russian Сортавала ) is a trunk road of federal importance in Russia . It runs from Saint Petersburg through the northwest of Leningrad Oblast , west around Lake Ladoga via the eponymous city of Sortavala not far from the state border with Finland to the R21 Kola road west of the Karelian capital Petrozavodsk . In its current condition (2013), the A121 is a good 450 km long, after the completion of all planned new sections it should be 427 km.
The road was given the status of a trunk road of federal importance and the number A121 in 2010. Previously, the section from Saint Petersburg to Sortavala was number A129, from there to Lemetti northwest of Pitkjaranta the number A130 and on the remaining section to Prjascha on today's R21 (formerly M18) the number R21. Alternatively, the old numbers can still be used until December 31, 2017.
A new four-lane route between Saint Petersburg and Sortavala is partly completed, partly under construction and partly projected. The first, 24 km long section from Saint Petersburg to the north of the Kerro settlement runs a few kilometers east of the old route of the A129 (which is now number 41K179 as a road of regional importance for the Leningrad Oblast) and went into operation in sections between 2010 and 2013. The planned extension route, which is partly under construction, follows partly the previous road, while larger towns such as Sosnowo and Priosersk are largely bypassed. Sosnowo is to be reached in 2018, the more northerly places in Leningrad Oblast only after 2020. A first project (as of 2013) for the Karelian section up to the level of Sortavala provides for a complete re-routing west of the previous route, closer to the Finnish border.
The former R21 between Prjascha and Lemetti, part of the shortest connection between the Karelian capital Petrozavodsk and the Finnish border, was extensively renovated between 1999 and 2003, long stretches of which were straightened and asphalted, and a 10 km long new section to the west of Lemetti former A130 connected.

A121 to 2007
Until 2007, another street in Leningrad Oblast was numbered A121. It runs along the southern coast of the Gulf of Finland over 218 km from Saint Petersburg via Peterhof , Sosnowy Bor and Ust-Luga to the A180 Narwa (formerly M11) highway between Kingissepp and Ivangorod . In 2007, this road was largely classified as a trunk road of regional importance in Leningrad Oblast. The section from Saint Petersburg to Rutschji north of Ust-Luga was given the number 41A-007, the westernmost section from Luschizy the numbers 41K-109 and 41K-113. A nearly 20 km long section around the port of Ust-Luga is part of a branch line from the A180 trunk road of federal importance.
