Ust-Luga ( Russian Усть-Луга , Finnish Laukaansuu ) is a rural settlement (possjolok) with 2173 inhabitants (2007 calculation) in Russia . It lies at the mouth of the river Luga in the Lugabucht the Baltic Sea , near the border with Estonia . The name is derived from the Russian word ustje for mouth .

geography

Ust-Luga belongs to the Kingisepp district of Leningrad Oblast and is located about 100 km west of Saint Petersburg . The settlement is the seat of the rural community Ust-Luschskoje selskoje posselenije , which includes, in addition to Ust-Luga, the ten villages of Gakkowo, Kaibolowo, Kirjamo, Konnowo, Krakolje, Lipowo, Luschizy, Meschniki, Tiskolowo and Wybje, as well as the three settlements near Preurgolowo belong to the Ust-Luga train station. The total number of inhabitants of the municipality is 2835 (October 14, 2010).

history

The place was first mentioned in 1676 on a Swedish map from 1676 as Ostroff Hoff , from Russian Ostrow ("island"). This name was in use until the 20th century. In the 19th century the village was mentioned as an Ischoric settlement with the Ischoric / Finnish name Laukaansuu .

economy

The seaport of the same name, which is mostly ice-free , is located near Ust-Luga , with a ferry connection for rail, car and passenger traffic between the Russian heartland, the Kaliningrad Oblast ( Baltijsk ferry terminal ); as German ports, Kiel and, since June 8, 2012, also the ferry port Sassnitz on Rügen are called regularly .

A container terminal built by NCC and Eurogate has been in operation since 2011 . An export terminal for up to 28 million barrels of crude oil was completed in 2012 . This new port is designed to withdraw cargo from the port in Tallinn in Estonia .

By 2024, new sea terminals for the handling of mineral fertilizers, coal, grain and general cargo with a total weight of almost 42 million tons will be built.

From 2001, with the completion of the first stage of the coal terminal, the expansion into an export port for Russian raw materials began.
