The A340 is a federal trunk road in Russia . In the Southeast Siberian Republic of Buryatia, it connects the R258 Baikal near Ulan-Ude over 245 kilometers with the border with Mongolia near Kjachta . It is part of the Asian Highway AH3 .

South of Lake Baikal, the road follows the course of the Selenga at some distance upwards, partly through the valleys of its tributaries, where it crosses the separating low mountain ridges over passes .

The road was given the number A340 in 2010. Previously, it was number A165 , which was newly assigned to a road in a completely different part of Russia: the Lermontov  - Cherkessk connection in the North Caucasus , which was previously number A156. A road in Astrakhan Oblast was designated as A340 until 2010 , which connects Astrakhan with the border with Kazakhstan and ran to Aktyubinsk (today Aqtöbe ) during the Soviet period (today Kazakh A27 ).
