Kubinka ( Russian Ку́бинка ) is a city with 22,964 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010) in Moscow Oblast ( Russia ). The place is a good 60 km west of Moscow , about halfway to Moshaisk in Odintsovsky district .

history

Kubinka has been known as a village in documents since the 15th century. The name could be derived from the family name of the early landowner in the area, Prince Ivan Kubenski.

The place only became economically important in the mid-19th century, at the time when the strategically important railway line from Moscow to Smolensk was relocated nearby . Through the later construction or expansion of other important roads (including today's M1 ) and the Great Moscow Railway Ring , which crosses the Smolensk route in Kubinka, the place became a traffic junction.

In 1931 a test line for cars and military vehicles from Soviet production was set up near Kubinka. At the same time, a military base was built there. In 1968 the place received the status of an urban-type settlement . Due to the incorporation of previously secret, surrounding military settlements (for example at the Kubinka military airfield to the north and the facilities of the Russian space troops to the south ), the number of inhabitants tripled in the early 2000s. As a result, Kubinka was granted city rights in 2004.
