history

Cathedral of the Savior Transfiguration of Nicholas Monastery

The place was created in 1380 with the establishment of a monastery by the Moscow Grand Duke Dmitri Donskoy in honor of his previous victory over the Golden Horde . After the nearby river Ugrescha, the monastery was named Nikolaus -loster on the Ugrescha , the settlement that developed next to it was also called Ugrescha or Ugreschskaja. The monastery existed until 1920, after which it was dissolved by the Bolsheviks and converted into a labor camp for street children. In 1921 a workers' settlement was built next to the camp, which in 1938 received the status of an urban settlement and its current name Dzerzhinsky (in honor of the politician and co-initiator of the camp Felix Dzerzhinsky ). Dzerzhinsky has been a city since 1981, and an independent city since 1996.

The Nicholas Monastery was only returned to the Russian Orthodox Church in 1991 , but without the oldest church building in the monastery: the 16th century St. Nicholas Cathedral was demolished in 1940.

Economy and Infrastructure

There are several chemical factories and a thermal power station in Dzerzhinsky . In terms of traffic, the city is connected to the Moscow ring road MKAD . Several bus and marshrutka lines provide public transport connections with Moscow and Lyubertsy. In addition, there is a railway branch line from Lyubertsy to Dzerzhinsky, which was closed in 1997 for passenger traffic.

Incidents

On March 30, 2006, the long-time mayor of Dzerzhinsky Viktor Dorkin fell victim to an alleged contract murder, which led to early mayor elections in June of the same year in Dzerzhinsky. The background to the crime was suspected to be Dorkin's dispute with a local construction company.
