The Kasplya River ( Russian and Belarusian Каспля ) is a left tributary of the Daugava River in the Russian Smolensk Oblast and in the Belarusian Woblasz Vitebsk .
The Kasplja has its origin in the small Kasplja Lake in the Smolensk Oblast, about 35 km northwest of the city of Smolensk . It flows mainly in a westerly direction. The Gobsa flows into the Kasplja on the right in Demidow . The Kasplja reaches Belarusian territory about 15 km above its mouth. It finally flows into the Daugava at Surasch .
The Kasplja has a length of 136 km. It drains an area of 5410 km². The river is mainly fed by the snowmelt . The mean discharge at Lepino , 13 km above the estuary, is 39.6 m³ / s.
In the Middle Ages , an important trade route led from the Baltic Sea via the Western Dvina to the Kasplja, from there the boats were transported overland ( portage ) to the Dnieper near Gnesdowo ( Smolensk ).
