The Vyazemsky rayon ( Russian Вяземский район ) is a Raion in the Smolensk Oblast in Russia . It is located in the east of the oblast.
75,485 inhabitants (2017) live in an area of 3,352.66 km². The administrative center of the Rajons is the city of Vyazma with 53,117 inhabitants (2017).
Geographical location
Neighboring Rajons are in the north of rayon Nowoduginski , in the northeast of rayon Gagarinsky , in eastern rayon Tjomkinski , south of the rayon Ugranski , in the western rayon Safonowski , in the northwest of rayon Dorogobuschski and kholm-zhirkovsky rayon .
history
In 1708 the Smolensk Governorate was formed as an administrative unit of the Russian Empire . Vyazma and the surrounding villages belonged to this governorate until 1929. From 1929 to 1937 the Rajon belonged to the Western Oblast . Since September 27, 1937, the Vyazemsky rajon has belonged to the newly founded Smolensk Oblast .
Attractions
In the village of Chmelita is the Griboyedov mansion, where the Russian diplomat and writer Alexander Griboyedov often stayed. The building, restored in 1967, is now a museum.
