The Smolenski rajon ( Russian Смоленский район ) is a raion in Smolensk Oblast in Russia . It is located in the western part of the oblast. 45,100 inhabitants (2010) live in an area of ​​2895 km². The administrative center of the Rajon is the city of Smolensk with around 327,000 inhabitants (2010), which does not belong to the Rajon itself, but forms an independent urban district .
