The Schisdra ( Russian Жиздра ) is a 223 km long left tributary of the Oka in the European part of Russia .

description

The Schisdra rises in the southwest of the Kaluga Oblast around 15 km east of the city of Lyudinowo . Initially it flows south, but after a few kilometers it turns east, where it reaches the city of Schisdra . It then turns to the north, only to turn again a little downstream in an easterly direction.

It flows curvy through the Central Russian Ridge in the southern Kaluga Oblast. Before the town of Koselsk , it turns north again. Shortly after flowing through the city, she passes the Optina Pustyn Monastery , a former spiritual center of the Russian Orthodox Church . Another 30 km further on, it joins the Oka from the left.

The Schisdra is frozen on average from late November to early April. In April there are pronounced spring floods during the snowmelt .

history

During the Second World War there were heavy and costly battles between the Wehrmacht and the Red Army at the Schisdra . After the strategically important railway junction Millerowo , about 300 km west of Stalingrad , fell into the hands of the Germans on July 16, 1942 , on August 11, 1942, later promoted and highly decorated Colonel Hermann Balck , at that time commander of the 11th Panzer Division , received the order that he should throw his fast units north over the Schisdra and form a bridgehead there. Balck reported several times to the high command that his men could not carry out the order. On August 17, Hitler's chief adjutant, Major General Rudolf Schmundt , even showed up at the command post to move the division forward.
