In the next few years Pawel Christow competed in some first-class international tournaments, of which he won several, leaving behind such good wrestlers as Wladimir Schatumow , USSR Ryszard Swierad from Poland, Dietmar Hinz , Constantin Alexandru and Totju Andonow , Bulgaria. His next start at an international championship he had again at the European Championships in 1979 in Bucharest . There he defeated the future Olympic champion Vincenzo Maenza from Italy , Jozsef Santha from Hungary, Salih Bora from Turkey and Anatoli Bosin from the USSR. In the final he lost to Constantin Alexandru, but was again vice European champion . In 1979 he also started at the World Championships in San Diego , where he won over Wieslaw Kucinski , Poland, Atsuji Miyahara , Japan a . Greg Williams from the United States. Against Alexei Schumakow and Constantin Alexandru he lost again, but still won a bronze medal at the World Championships.

In 1980 Pawel Christow managed to qualify for the Olympic Games in Moscow . He came there to victories over Kent Andersson from Sweden , Vincenzo Maenza a . Reijo Haaparanta from Finland . In the decisive battles for a medal, however, he lost against Constantin Alexandru and Saksylik Uschkempirow from the USSR and thus just missed a medal with 4th place.
