Stefan Angelow
Stefan Angelow (Bulgarian Стефан Ангелов Георгиев; born January 7, 1947 in Byala Voda , Pleven Oblast ; † December 21, 2019 ) was a Bulgarian wrestler . He won a bronze medal in the Greco-Roman style in paper weight at the Olympic Games in 1972 and 1976 .
Career
Stefan Angelow was a Bulgarian wrestler who benefited from the introduction of paper weight as the lightest class with a weight limit of only 48 kg in 1969 by the international wrestling federation (FILA), because he was relatively easy to enter it with a height of only 1.52 meters Weight class. Nothing is known about its origin and development. But it was used in 1969 at the World Cup in Mar del Plata , where this paper weight was in the program for the first time. For this reason he had to have started wrestling a few years earlier, i.e. as a teenager, in which he concentrated entirely on the Greco-Roman style.
In Mar del Plata he came to victories over the Canadian Gordon Bertie and the South Korean Baek Seung-hyun, by losing to Gheorghe Berceanu from Romania , who would later become one of his main competitors, and against Vladimir Kustov from the USSR he missed with a 4th place just under a medal. At the 1970 World Cup in Edmonton , he had to pay a lot of money, because he lost to Minami Haruya from Japan and was disqualified in the fight against Rolf Lacour from the Federal Republic of Germany together with him and therefore ended up in 13th place.
Just a year later, however, he managed to win the bronze medal in paper weight at the World Championships in Sofia . He defeated Günther Maas from Germany and Hizir Sari from Turkey , fought against Ferenc Seres from Hungary and won over Jaroszek from Poland and Bernd Drechsel from the GDR . Since he only achieved point wins, for which he was burdened with one missing point and once wrestled with a draw, for which he received two missing points, the unfortunate situation arose that he had to be eliminated after five fights with 6 missing points, although he had not lost a single fight . But he still reached 3rd place.
Stefan Angelow also took this place at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich , winning an Olympic bronze medal . Particularly noteworthy was his victory over the 1971 world champion , Vladimir Subkov , from the USSR. Ferenc Seres, Lennart Svensson from Sweden , Lorenzo Calafiore from Italy and Kazuhara Ishida from Japan were the other athletes he defeated. He suffered defeats from Gheorghe Berceanu and Rahim Aliabadi from Iran . In the spring of 1972 he had already become vice- European champion at the European championships in Katowice . He had u. a. Again defeated Subkow from the USSR, but lost the final fight against Gheorghe Berceanu.
In 1973 and 1974 Stefan Angelow could not win any medals at the international championships. In 1973 he was used at the World Cup in Tehran , where he wrestled against Constantin Alexandru from Romania after victories over Moradali Shirani from Iran, Salih Bora from Turkey and Ferenc Seres . In his last fight at this world championship, he was disqualified together with his opponent Vladimir Subkow for "passivity" because neither of these two wrestlers was able to score. For this he received, like Subkow, four missing points, with which he was eliminated and took 4th place, while Subkow was still world champion despite the four missing points, which he also received . The regulations of that time still allowed such results, according to the current (2009) valid this would no longer be possible.
At the 1974 European Championships in Madrid , Stefan Angelow lost after winning three fights against Constantin Alexandru and Alexei Schumakow from the USSR and finished 5th. At the 1974 World Cup he was not used.
In 1975 he reached 3rd place at the World Championships in Minsk and won a bronze medal again . There he won over Kazuhara Ishida, Khalil Rashid-Mohammadzadeh from Iran, Otto Köb from Austria , lost to Gheorghe Berceanu , won over Salih Bora and lost to Vladimir Subkow .
At the European Championships in Leningrad in 1976 , Stefan Angelow only managed one victory over Salih Bora . Against Ferenc Seres and Alexei Schumakow he lost and only reached 5th place. At the Olympic Games this year in Montreal he fought successfully again and defeated Lee In-chung from South Korea, Antonio Quistelli from Italy, Khalil Rashid-Mohammadzadeh and others. Salih Bora. He lost to Gheorghe Berceanu and Alexei Schumakow, but he was sure to have his second Olympic bronze medal .
After the Olympic Games in 1976, Stefan Angelow ended his international wrestling career. Nothing is known about his further life.
