Alexei Wassiljewitsch Schumakow Russian Алексей Васильевич Шумаков (born September 7, 1948 in Pochjot , Krasnoyarsk region ) is a former Soviet wrestler . He was a 1976 Olympic gold medalist in the Greco-Roman style paper weight.

Career

Alexei Shumakov began wrestling as a teenager, focusing on the Greco-Roman style. As a student, he became a member of the Burevestnik Krasnoyarsk sports club . In the junior sector and at the beginning of his career as a senior, he was not yet so successful. At a height of 1.52 meters, it was very light, so that it did not have too much difficulty in training in the paper weight introduced in 1969, which reached up to 48 kg body weight. He first appeared in 1972, when he was already 24 years old, at one of the most important Soviet tournaments, the "Ivan Poddubny" memorial in Minsk , in the paper weight list of winners. He took 3rd place there behind Vladimir Subkow and Kurbanow.

In the following year 1973 he became vice-world champion of the students in Moscow behind Gheorghe Berceanu from Romania . In 1974 he was used at the European Championships in Madrid , where he finished second behind Constantin Alexandru from Romania. He reached the same place at the European Championships in 1975 in Ludwigshafen am Rhein , where he lost again to Constantin Alexandru in the final. At the world championships of those years, Vladimir Subkov , who was four times world champion, was used.

In 1976 Alexei Shumakov was then European champion in paper weight for the first time in Leningrad . In the final he defeated his old rival Constantin Alexandru . At the Soviet elimination competitions for the Olympic Games that year, he also succeeded in eliminating Vladimir Subkow and securing the starting place for the Olympic Games in Montreal . In Montreal he then needed six victories to become Olympic champion . He beat Ferenc Seres from Hungary , Biambajev Javhlantegs from Mongolia , Michael Farina from the United States, Yoshite Morikawa from Japan , Stefan Angelow from Bulgaria and Gheorghe Berceanu in turn . The Olympic gold medal was the reward for this outstanding achievement.

In 1977 Alexei Schumakow won the world title in paper weight for the first time in Gothenburg . He won ahead of Salih Bora from Turkey, Todor Jordanow from Bulgaria, Zerang Kermat from Iran and Jürgen Kleer from the Federal Republic of Germany . In 1978 and 1979, as in 1977, he only competed in the World Cup. In both years he finished second behind Constantin Alexandru , against whom he lost on points. In 1978 in Mexico City he celebrated victories over Horiwaki Yoshiteri, Japan, Jozsef Santha , Hungary, Salih Bora, Todor Gontschew, Bulgaria a. Roman Kierpacz , Poland and 1979 in San Diego he won over Atsuji Miyahara , Japan, Wieslaw Kucinski , Poland, Pawel Christow , Bulgaria and Ferenc Seres .

In 1979 Alexei Shumakov took 2nd place in the Soviet paperweight championship behind Russanov, but ahead of Sakselik Uschkempirow , but won the even more important Spartakiad in 1979 in front of Uschkempirow and Savchuk. In 1980 he was replaced by Sakselik Uschkempirow, who also won the starting place at the Olympic Games that year in Moscow .

Alexei Shumakov then ended his international wrestling career. Unfortunately, nothing is known about his further life.
