Kamil Fatkulin (in Cyrillic script Камиль Фаткулин; born July 1, 1957 ) is a former Soviet wrestler of Uzbek origin. He was European champion in 1984 in the Greco-Roman style bantamweight.

Career

Kamil Fatkulin, a native of Uzbekistan , began wrestling in adolescence. After the first major successes at national level, the sports student was delegated to the wrestling center in Tashkent . There he was formed into a world-class athlete in the Greco-Roman style by the coaches Rustam Kudraschew and Manurjan Reziew.

Even as a junior he celebrated great success when he became Junior World Champion in paper weight in 1975 in Chaskowo and in 1976 when he was Junior European Champion in flyweight in Poznań . In the spring of 1977 he was used for the first time in a European championship for seniors in Bursa, Turkey . In the final of this championship there was an exciting three-way battle between him, Nicu Gângă from Romania and Lajos Rácz from Hungary. These three athletes defeated each other, with Kamil winning against Gângă and losing to Rácz. Due to the better points ratio from the preliminary fights, Lajos Rácz went off the mat as European champion in front of Nicu Gângă and Kamil Fatkulin.

At the World Championships in Gothenburg that same year , Kamil took 2nd place. On the way there he defeated, among other things, the German top wrestler Rolf Krauss from Schifferstadt , but lost the final battle against Nicu Gângă.

In the years that followed, Kamil had to learn what it means to defend a top position in the Soviet Union against extremely strong competition. He did not always succeed in asserting himself against his competitors Wachtang Blagidze , Vasili Fomin , Benor Paschajew , Shamil Serikow , Vladimir Pogudin and Vitaly Konstantinow . All these wrestlers became Olympic, world or European champions in his weight class at the time when Kamil was also active.

Kamil Fatkulin came back in 1979 at the World Flyweight Championships in San Diego . He was there again after a defeat against Lajos Rácz vice world champion. In 1980, Wachtang Blagidze represented the Soviet colors in the flyweight division and became Olympic and European champions.

Kamil only got another chance to prove himself at the world championship in Kiev in 1983 . Measured against the demands, he was again unable to fully meet this opportunity, because again he had to be content with 2nd place. In the final battle he was defeated by the Japanese Masako Eto . In 1984 Kamil finally won a title. He became European bantamweight champion in Jönköping . However, he benefited from an injury to Pasquale Passarelli from the Federal Republic of Germany , who therefore could not compete against him in the final battle. Passarelli was then Olympic champion in Los Angeles by defeating world champion Eto. Fatkulin was absent here because of the boycott of the games by the Soviet Union.

In the following years, Kamil Fatkulin was no longer used at the international championships. Today he works as a wrestler trainer in Tashkent.
