Salih Bora
Salih Bora (born August 23, 1953 ) is a former Turkish wrestler . He was Vice World Champion in Greco-Roman style in paper weight in 1977, 1981 and 1982 .
Career
Salih Bora began wrestling as a teenager at the Altinay Kulübü sports club . He concentrated on the Greco-Roman style and, after the first major successes in the national area, switched to the Istanbul Demirspor Kulübü sports club . The 1.51 meter tall athlete started in paper weight, the lightest weight class, introduced in 1969, which had its limit of 48 kg body weight.
He made his debut at an international championship in 1973 when he finished 7th at the World Cup in Tehran with two wins and two losses. Also in 1974 he was used at the World Cup, which took place in Katowice . He came there to a victory over the strong Iranian Rahim Aliabadi , but lost to Constantin Alexandru from Romania and Georgi Georgijew from Bulgaria and came in 8th place.
He took another step forward in the World Cup 1975 in Minsk , where he with wins over Ferenc Seres , Hungary , Dietmar Hinz , DDR and Karoly Kacsar, USA and defeats against Gheorghe Berceanu , Romania and Stefan Angelov from Bulgaria to the 4th place just missed a medal. At the European Championships in 1976 in Leningrad , Salih Bora suffered a setback, because he lost there to Stefan Angelow and Constantin Alexandru and was only 7th out of eight participants. Even at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal , things didn't go much better for him, because he only managed to beat Michael Farina from the United States there and, after losing to Dietmar Hinz and Stefan Angelow, was eliminated after the third round and landed the 7th place.
In 1977 Salih Bora just missed the medal ranks with a 4th place after victories over Dietmar Hinz and Jozsef Santha from Hungary and defeats against Wieslaw Kucinski from Poland and Constantin Alexandru at the European Championships in Bursa . At the world championship this year in Gothenburg he had the breakthrough, because he was won over Jozsef Santha, Jan Mansson, Sweden, Jürgen Kleer , FRG and others. Todor Jordanow, Bulgaria Vice World Champion , where he lost in the final against Alexei Shumakow from the USSR.
In 1979 he finished 4th at the European Championships in Bucharest with victories over Reijo Haaparanta from Finland and Freddy Scherer , FRG and defeats against Anatoli Bosin from the USSR and Pawel Christow . Even more annoying for him was the fact that Turkey did not take part in the next three international championships, the 1979 World Cup, the 1980 European Championship and the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow . This deprived him of the opportunity to win one or the other medal.
He proved that he would have been able to do so in 1981 when he played at the European Championships in Gothenburg a . a. Vincenzo Maenza from Italy defeated and won the European Championship bronze medal. He did even better at the World Championships that year in Oslo , where he won over Freddy Scherer , Lars Rønningen , Norway , Ferenc Seres and Fumikazu Sasaki from Japan in a defeat in the final against the 1980 Olympic champion Saksylik Uschkempirow from the USSR again vice world champion .
After a weaker 5th place at the European Championships in Varna , he repeated his success from the 1981 World Cup in 1982 at the World Cup in Katowice . He finished there behind Timor Taimuras Kasaraschwili from the USSR for the third time the 2nd place in a world championship.
In 1983 Salih Bora only started at the Mediterranean Games in Casablanca , where he finished third in paper weight behind Vincenzo Maenza and Ali Farag from Egypt . At the European Championships in Jönköping in 1984 , he disappointed, because he lost to Pekka Tanner from Finland and Magyatdin Allachwerdijew from the USSR and reached only 7th place with eight participants. Even at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles , when many of the favored wrestlers from the Eastern Bloc countries were missing, he did not succeed in winning a medal. After a defeat against Vincenzo Maenza in the first fight, he won over Mark Fuller from the United States, Li Haisheng from China and Kent Andersson from Sweden, but he lost the decisive fight for the Olympic bronze medal against Ikuzu Saito from Japan ( 5: 7 technical points).
After these Olympic Games, Salih Bora resigned from active wrestling. He started the coaching career and has been the head coach of Turkish wrestlers in the Greco-Roman style for several years. An office that he still holds in 2009. One of his "master students" is the Olympic champion and multiple world champion Hamza Yerlikaya .
