Günter Schurath

Günter Schurath (born January 3, 1929 - † July 4, 2004 ) was a German diplomat . He was Ambassador of the GDR in Iraq , in Kuwait , in Cyprus and in Norway and Iceland .

Life

Schurath, a member of the SED , studied from 1959 to 1963 at the German Academy for Political Science and Law in Potsdam-Babelsberg . He completed his studies with a degree in political science.

Since 1963 he was a member of the diplomatic service of the GDR. He was a member of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs (MfAA) and the GDR diplomatic missions in Moscow and Baghdad . From 1966 he was Consul General in Iraq, from 1969 section head Iraq in the MfAA and then head of the Third Non-European Department ( Arab countries ) in the MfAA. From 1973 to 1977 he was the GDR's ambassador to Iraq, and from 1974 to 1975 he was also second accredited to Kuwait. He was then deputy head of the Near and Middle East department at the MfAA from 1977 to 1980 . From 1980 to 1986 Schurath was the GDR's ambassador in Nicosia . 1989/1990 he was ambassador in Oslo and second accredited in Iceland.
