Mark Fuller

Mark Albert Fuller (born March 25, 1961 in Roseville , California ) is a retired American wrestler . He was a three-time Olympian and Pan-American champion in 1991 in the Greco-Roman style paper weight.

Career

Mark Fuller began wrestling as a teenager in high school. He began, like all high school wrestlers, in the free style, but soon noticed that he had talent for the Greco-Roman style as well and successfully switched to this style. After high school, he attended Brigham Young University , where he trained to be a PE teacher.

His international career began in 1979. He was Junior World Champion in the age group "Juniors" in Colorado Springs , that is the age group up to the age of 18 years. He won there in the Greco-Roman style in paper weight before Bernd Scherer from the Federal Republic of Germany and Erwin Goris from the Netherlands . In 1981 he was also Junior World Champion in the age group "Espoirs" in Vancouver , that is the age group up to the age of 20. There he left Magyatdin Allachwerdijew from the Soviet Union , Bratan Zenow from Bulgaria , Bernd Scherer and Vincenzo Maenza from Italy behind. Maenza later became Olympic champion , Allachwerdijew and Zenow world champion .

Mark Fuller could not achieve such success as a senior. However, he did manage to qualify for the Olympic Games from 1980 to 1992 in the United States four times. In 1980 in Moscow he could not start because of the boycott of these games by the United States. 1984 in Los Angeles lost in paper weight against Li Haisheng from China (7: 8 technical points) and against Salih Bora from Turkey (2: 6 technical points) and came in 8th place. In 1988 in Seoul he won the paper weight against Ikazu Saito from Japan and then had to accept narrow point defeats against Jon Rønningen from Norway (4: 6) and Vincenzo Maenza (4: 7), which forced him to retire. Unfortunately, the exact place he reached in Seoul is not recorded in any source. The placement should be between ninth and twelve. At the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona , Mark Fuller managed to win against Nik Zagronitschni from Israel , but lost against Wilber Sánchez from Cuba and Iliuță Dăscălescu from Romania and ended up in 11th place.

Mark Fuller also started a few times at world championships and achieved similar placements as in the Olympic Games. In 1981 in Oslo he took 11th place in paper weight and in 1983 in Kiev the 7th place. In 1985 he started at the World Championships in Kolbotn , Norway , but the place he fought there is nowhere recorded. However, he should not have placed in the top ten. At the 1989 World Cup in Martigny he came in 9th place and at the 1991 World Cup in Varna on 10th place.

Mark Fuller was much more successful at the Pan American Games and the Pan American Championships. In 1983 he came at the Pan American Games in Caracas in flyweight behind the Cuban Edmundo Miranda on the 2nd place and in 1988 he finished in the Pan American Championships in flyweight behind Pedro Roque Favier from Cuba and Juan Bernardino Cortes from Mexico in 3rd place. The greatest success of his career with the seniors he finally achieved at the Pan American Games in Havana in 1991 , because he won there in paper weight ahead of Geovany Mato from Cuba a. Jose A. Sabino from the Dominican Republic.

Mark Fuller ended his career as an active wrestler after the 1992 Olympics. He then worked as a sports teacher and trainer for various ring teams and organizations, mostly looking after the youngsters. He currently resides in Orem , Utah .
