Wilber Sánchez
Wilber Sánchez Amita (born December 21, 1968 in Contramaestre ) is a former Cuban wrestler . He was world champion in 1993 and 1994 in Greco-Roman style paper weight.
Career
Wilber Sánchez started wrestling as a teenager in 1981. After initial successes he was delegated to the training center Cerro Pelado of the Cuban national wrestling team in Havana . There he was trained by Carlos Ulasia and Pedro Val. He focused on the Greco-Roman style. At a height of 1.57 meters, he always wrestled in paper weight, the lightest weight class, which at that time had its weight limit of 48 kg body weight.
Wilber Sánchez began his international wrestling career at the Junior World Championships (Espoirs) in Burnaby, Canada . He came there in paper weight behind Oleg Kutscherenko from the Soviet Union on the 2nd place.
In 1988 Wilber Sánchez was the first Pan American champion ahead of Eric Wetzel from the United States and Victor Hugo from Colombia . He was not allowed to start at the Olympic Games in Seoul in the same year , because Cuba boycotted these Games for political reasons after the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles . In 1989 he was again Pan American champion in Colorado Springs . At the 1989 World Cup in Martigny / Switzerland , however, it has not yet been used.
In 1990 Wilber Sánchez became Central American Master in Mexico City and again Pan American Master in Colorado Springs. He left Joel Manuel Medina from Venezuela , Mynor Ramírez from Guatemala , Lewis Dorrance from the United States and José Martinez from Venezuela behind at these events . For the first time this year he was at the start of the World Cup, which took place in Rome . He finished there in a good 5th place in paper weight, but lost when it came to the medals, the decisive fights against Oleg Kutscherenko and against Vincenzo Maenza from Italy .
In 1991 he could not participate in any international championships due to injury. In 1992 he was again Pan American champion before Mynor Ramírez and Enrique Aguilar Zermeno from Mexico . At the subsequent Olympic Games in Barcelona , he started in paper weight and won a bronze medal there. In the fight for the pool victory, he lost it clearly against Oleg Kutscherenko (0:11 technical points), but won the fight for the bronze medal against Fuat Yildiz from Germany with 5: 0 technical. In 1993 Wilber Sánchez continued his success on the American continent. He was in Ponce Central American and Caribbean paperweight champion in front of Enrique Aguilar Zermeno and Mynor Ramírez and also won the Pan American Championship in front of Enrique Aguilar Zermeno and Antonio Ochoa from Venezuela. At the World Championships in Stockholm in 1993 , Wilber Sánchez was at the height of his skills, because he became world champion in paper weight there in a superior style . In the final he defeated Zafar Gulijew from Russia clearly 5-0 techn. Points.
In 1994 Wilber Sánchez continued his success. He was again Pan American Master in Mexico City ahead of Isaac Ramaswany from the United States and Edgar Fernando Perez Ardila from Guatemala . At the world championships in Tampere he successfully defended his world title from the previous year and became world champion again. In the final he won over Aljaksandr Paulau from Belarus .
In 1995 Wilber Sánchez's success decreased noticeably. He won at the Pan American Games in Mar del Plata in the paper weight behind Mujaahid Maynard from the United States and Enrique Aguilar Zermeno only the third place and lost the Grand Prix of Germany in Schifferstadt , was the same as a World Cup tournament of FILA , in the final against Sergei Suvorov from Russia . At the 1995 World Cup in Prague he was eliminated in the 3rd round with a high point defeat against Oleg Kutscherenko (0: 9 technical points) and only finished 10th overall.
In 1996 Wilber Sánchez won the American qualification tournament for the Olympic Games in Cali ahead of Enrique Aguilar Zermeno and Jose Ochoa. At the Olympic Games in Atlanta he won over Mujaahid Maynard and for the first time also over Oleg Kutscherenko , but then lost to Aljaksandr Paulau and Kang Yong-Gyun from North Korea . With another victory over Gela Papashvili from Georgia, he could only fight for 5th place.
After these Olympic Games, Wilber Sánchez resigned from international competition. He completed his training as a sports teacher and is today (2010) director of martial arts at the Cerro Pelado training center in Havana.
