Aljaksandr Paulau (wrestler)
Alyaksandr Valeryevich Paulau ( Belarusian Аляксандр Валер'евіч Паўлаў , Russian Александр Валерьевич Павлов , Alexander Pavlov Valeryevich * 9. July 1973 in Sovetsk , Russian SFSR , Soviet Union ) is a former Belarusian wrestler . He won a Greco-Roman style silver medal in paper weight at the 1996 Olympics .
Career
Allajksandr Paulau began wrestling as a teenager in 1983 in the Soviet Union . He concentrated on the Greco-Roman style. In 1992, after the collapse of the Soviet Union , he started for Belarus . He was a member of the Profsojuz Hrodna sports club and was trained there by Vyacheslav Maximov. It was very light and started at a height of 1.54 meters in the lightest weight class, paper weight, the weight limit of which was 48 kg body weight and, after the elimination of this weight class, from 1997 in flyweight (up to 54 kg body weight). Aljaksandr Paulau also wrestled in the German Bundesliga.
In 1992 he started for the Ukraine at the Junior European Championship (Espoirs = age group up to the age of 20) in Székesfehérvár . He finished there behind Magomed Magomedow from Russia , but in front of Armen Nazarjan from Armenia, the 2nd place. That was the beginning of his international career.
In the senior class, he first started in an international championship in 1993. He came in 10th place at the World Championships in Stockholm . At the European Championships in 1994, which took place in Athens , he did only marginally better because he was ninth there. In the same year he was used at the World Championships in Tampere , where he did very well. He fought his way up to the finals, but lost to Wilber Sánchez from Cuba . But he was runner-up in the world championship .
At the 1995 European Championships in Besançon he lost to the 1992 Olympic champion Oleg Kutscherenko , who started for Germany in 1993 (1: 6 technical points) and took 4th place in paper weight, which he just missed a medal. Against Oleg Kutscherenko, Aljaksandr Paulau was also defeated at the 1995 World Cup in Prague (with 0: 5 technical points). He came in 6th place there. He took the same place at the 1996 European Championships in Budapest . The 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta became the highlight of his career . He reached the final there and was defeated by the South Korean Sim Kwan-ho on points (0: 4 technical points). But winning the Olympic silver medal was the greatest success of his career.
After that, Aljaksandr Paulau did not reach any top positions in international championships. He was also unable to qualify for participation in the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney .
