He won a bronze medal at the 1996 Olympic Games and was three times European champion in the Greco-Roman style in paper weight.

Career

Safar Guliyev started wrestling as a teenager in 1985. After initial successes in the national area, the 1.54 meter tall athlete, who always wrestled in the paper weight, the lightest weight class, went to the Dinamo Ulyanovsk sports club . There he was trained by A. Winnik. In the 1995/96 season he started for RWG Mömbris -Königshofen in the German Bundesliga and played a total of seven fights for this club. Shortly before the start of the final round of the German team championship, he returned to Russia without notifying his club , because the club did not want to meet additional financial demands from him. In Mömbris it was given the unflattering name "The Christmas Refugee".

His international career began in 1992 in the collapsing Soviet Union . In that year he started for the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and in 1993 decided to start for Russia in the future .

In 1992 he was used by the Russian Wrestling Federation at the European Championships in Copenhagen . He finished there behind Lars Rønningen from Norway and Iliuță Dăscălescu from Romania in 3rd place. He won u. a. There he won victories over Andrzej Głąb from Poland , Michael Zdetovetsky, Latvia , Gela Papaschwili from Georgia, Alexander Mater Bortschuk from Ukraine and in the final over the Israeli Nick Zagranitschni from the Soviet Union . Since Olympic champion Oleg Kutscherenko had meanwhile emigrated to Germany , Gulijew also started at the 1993 World Cup in Stockholm . He defeated there u. a. in a pool fight Stefan Gartmann from Germany high on points, but lost in the final to the South Korean Sim Gwon-ho with 0: 5 techn. Points and became vice world champion .

In 1994 Safar Gulijew was again European champion in Athens . In the final he took eight points from the Hungarian Jozsef Hamzok with an impressive action within 15 seconds, so that he resigned and gave up. At the World Cup in Tampere in 1994 he was eliminated early and only finished 14th. Unfortunately, it could not be determined against whom he suffered the defeat that meant his early departure, because all sources are silent about it.

At the 1995 European Championships in Besançon , Safar Gulijew could not defend his title. He was defeated there in the final to Ioannis Agatzanjan , who came from Armenia and started for Greece , 3: 5 techn. Points. At the 1995 World Cup in Prague, he lost to Sim Gwon-ho in the pool final, but defeated Oleg Kutscherenko 6-0 in the fight for the bronze medal in the World Cup . Points.

In 1996 Safar Gulijew won the European title for the third time in Budapest . He won over Vyacheslav Sergijenko from Ukraine , Marian Manolescu from Romania , Nick Zagranitschni , Francesco Cosentino and Ioannis Agatzanjan and thus reciprocated for the defeat in the final of the European Championship in 1995.

At the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta , Safar Gulijew caused another scandal. He fought his way there after he was in his first fight against Sim Gwon-ho with 1: 2 techn. Was inferior in points, with wins over Mujaahid Maynard , USA, Bayram Özdemir , Turkey , Gela Papashvili from Georgia and Kang Yong-gyun from North Korea the bronze medal . Then he was convicted of doping and stripped of the bronze medal. He had taken the banned stimulant bromantane. In response to a Russian protest, however, he was granted the bronze medal again because the responsible laboratory allegedly made mistakes in securing the doping sample. In the lists of doping cases at the Olympic Games, however, he is still listed.

After the Olympic Games, Safar Gulijew was no longer used in any international championship. Nothing is known about his further life.
