Andrzej Głąb
Andrzej Głąb (born November 10, 1966 in Chełm ) is a former Polish wrestler . He won at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul , a silver medal in Greco-Roman style in the paper weight.
Career
Andrzej Głąb, who learned to be a mechanic, started playing karate as a teenager, but soon switched to wrestling. As a member of the Gryfa Chełm sports club from 1982 to 1999, he was trained by Andrzei Wojda and in the national team by Stanisław Krzesiński and Ryszard Swierad . He concentrated fully on the Greco-Roman style and always wrestled with paper weight, the weight class up to 48 kg body weight.
His international career began in 1986 when he finished 4th in the paper weight category at the European Junior Championships in Malmö . In the same year he was also used at the World Championships in Budapest and reached a good 5th place there. He took similar places at the 1987 European Championships in Tampere (5th), at the 1987 World Championships in Clermont-Ferrand (4th) and at the 1988 European Championships in Kolbotn near Oslo (4th). Magyatdin Allachwerdijew from the USSR , Bratan Zenow from Bulgaria , Markus Scherer from the Federal Republic of Germany , Lars Rønningen from Norway and Vincenzo Maenza from Italy were the wrestlers he couldn't get past at these championships.
Andrzej Głąb achieved the greatest success of his career at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul . In paper weight, he won the silver medal behind Vincenzo Maenza . This was made possible primarily by his clear win on points (10: 5 technical points) in the pool final over the reigning world champion Magyatdin Allachwerdijew . In the final he lost against Vincenzo Maenza with 0: 3 techn. Points.
1989 Andrzej Głąb finished at the European Championships in Oulu again a good 4th place and at the World Championships of the same year he placed 5th, which he fought for with a 5-0 point victory over Georgio Nikitas from Greece . After that, he didn't get such good results. At the European Championships in 1990 in Poznan he came in 7th place and at the 1991 World Championships in Varna he only came in 11th place.
He then ended his international wrestling career and trained as a sports teacher at the Polish Sports University AWF. He then became a coach at his home club Gryfa Chełm, where he formed Dariusz and Piotr Jabłoński into world-class wrestlers.
