Jim Sullivan (born December 1903 in Cardiff , Wales , † 1977 in Wigan , England ) was a Welsh rugby league player on the position of goalkeeper and was a rugby coach after his playing career.
In 1921 Sullivan moved after a game for the Barbarians from the Welsh rugby union club Cardiff RFC to the English rugby league club Wigan Warriors . For the next 20 years he dominated the position of goalkeeper in the British rugby league. By 1946 he came in 774 games to 2,317 successful kicks over the Malstangen and 4,883 points for Wigan; an even better yield was prevented by the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939. After the end of the war he only came to a few missions for the Batley Bulldogs .
At the Wigan Warriors he is still the player with the most stakes and career points. His 161 successful kicks over the poles for Wigan in the 1934/35 season remained a British record until the 1980s. He also holds the record for the most successful kicks over the penalty bars in a game of the British rugby league, making him the best kicker of all time. He completed international matches for Wales , Great Britain , England and the international team Other Nationalities .
Sullivan took part in three tours of the British national team to Australasia (1924, 1928, 1932). In 1932 he was the first Welsh team captain to lead the selection to victories in all six international matches against Australia and New Zealand . He decided not to take part in the 1936 tour for personal reasons.
He also played professional baseball for a short time in the 1930s .
From 1932 he was player-coach for Wigan. After retiring from active sport, Sullivan remained the club's coach until 1952 before moving to St Helens RLFC . In 1961 he returned to Wigan as a coach, only to quit for health reasons only a few months later.
In 1988 he was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the English Rugby League Association ( Rugby Football League ).
