Bernd Scherer (born May 22, 1961 in Ludwigshafen am Rhein ) is a former German wrestler and Vice European Champion 1985 in paper weight (up to 48 kg body weight) in the Greco-Roman style .

Career

Bernd Scherer grew up in Ludwigshafen am Rhein. Together with his brothers Freddy Scherer and Markus Scherer, he began wrestling with coach Walter Gehring at KSG Ludwigshafen in the late 1960s. Like his brothers, Bernd Scherer was very light and as an adult usually weighed between 50 kg and 55 kg. As a teenager, Scherer was one of the best wrestlers in the Federal Republic of Germany in the Greco-Roman style in the respective age groups .

In 1973, at the age of twelve, Bernd Scherer was second winner of the German school championship (age group up to 14 years of age) in the class up to 25 kg body weight. In 1974 he became German master student in the class up to 31 kg. He became German youth champion in 1978 (up to 44 kg) and 1979 (up to 48 kg). In 1980 and 1981 Scherer was German junior champion (each in the class up to 52 kg). He was German senior champion ( paper weight ) in 1984, 1985 and 1987. In 1988, he finally won the German flyweight championships .

Bernd Scherer has always faced tough competition from his brothers throughout his career. All three wrestled exclusively in the Greco-Roman style and had to train down to paper weight (up to 48 kg body weight) if they wanted to achieve international success. For the fly weight (up to 52 kg) her physical requirements were not sufficient to be able to keep up with the world's elite. In terms of paper weight, however, they have long been among the top international class.

After Bernd Scherer had taken 2nd place in the 1979 World Youth Championship in paper weight, he had to wait until 1984 for his next international assignment (European Championship in Jönköping ). There he just missed a medal with a 4th place, which he won a year later at the European Championships in Leipzig with a 2nd place. (Markus Scherer is often incorrectly mentioned in statistics as 2nd of the EM 1985 in paper weight.)

At the world championship of the same year in Kolbotn (Norway) his brother Markus started in paper weight. Therefore Bernd Scherer had to switch to the flyweight and came in 9th place in this weight class. It was similar for him at the European Championships in Athens in 1986 and in Tampere in 1987 . Both times he had to start in the flyweight division and finished 10th and 8th.

After Bernd Scherer had not qualified for the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul , he ended his international wrestling career. After that he was a successful team fighter for KSV Wiesental for several years .
