Günter Maas (born November 15, 1941 in Elm , Saarland ) is a former German wrestler . He was a seven-time German champion and Olympic participant.

Career

Günter Maas started wrestling at AC Elm at the age of 11 . He worked in both styles, the free and the Greco-Roman style. In the course of his career, in addition to AC Elm, he also wrestled for KSV Schwalbach , KSV Eppelborn , ASV Schifferstadt and for WKG Schwalbach / Schwarzenholz / Elm / Ensdorf .

Günter Maas, who took up the profession of teacher, was extremely easy. In the first years of his career he was still wrestling with flyweight, the weight class that reached up to 52 kg body weight. In those years he belonged to the top class in Saarland, but could not achieve any major successes at the national German level. The flyweight was mastered in the FRG by Paul Neff and Rolf Lacour . The only medal he won in a German championship until 1968 was that for 3rd place in the 1962 German junior championship in free style.

Günter Maas' time came in 1969 when paper weights were introduced that went up to 48 kg. In this weight class he won a total of seven German championship titles in both styles from 1969 to 1976. There is also a German team championship, which he won in 1971 with the ASV Schifferstadt team.

In 1969 he was used for the first time at an international championship, the European championship in Sofia . He came in 9th place in free style. At the 1971 World Cup, which also took place in Sofia, he defeated the Americans Wayne Homes and Ferenc Seres from Hungary in the Greco-Roman style , but lost to Stefan Angelow from Bulgaria and Rahim Aliabadi from Iran . He finished 7th in the final bill.

At the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich , he was again in the Greco-Roman. Style used. After a bye in the 1st round he lost to Rahim Aliabadi and Kazuhara Ishida from Japan and reached the 8th place.

The conclusion of his international wrestling career was the 10th place in the Greco-Roman. Style at the 1973 World Cup in Tehran . He won there over Karoly Kanczar from the United States and lost to Raimo Hirvonen from Finland and Ryszard Swierad from Poland .

Günter Maas achieved some nice successes in well-filled international tournaments. In 1970 he won the international US championship, in 1971 at the Klippan tournament in Sweden and in 1973 at the Grand Prix of the Federal Republic of Germany in Moosburg an der Isar .

After his active time, Günter Maas worked for the Saarland Wrestling Association for many years as a trainer in the youth field.
