Willi Heckmann

Willi Heckmann (born March 22, 1952 in Nussloch ) is a former German wrestler , trainer and current director of the sports school of the State Sports Association of Rhineland-Palatinate in Schifferstadt .

Career as a wrestler

Willi Heckmann started as a child with the rings at AC Germania in the Heidelberg district Rohrbach . As a performance wrestler, he was only on the mat for VfK Schifferstadt . At the Junior European Championships in 1971 he was able to win the bronze medal. Eight German championship titles in the youth and junior division followed between 1971 and 1980, seven titles in the freestyle paper and flyweight athletes. He was twice in the championship relay of the VfK, 1971 and 1976. At the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal , he finished 8th. He was appointed to the German national team nine times.

Coaching career

After his active career, the qualified sports teacher was freestyle trainer at VfK Schifferstadt and also played a key role in the following German team championships of the relay. At the age of 37, the coach Heckmann surprisingly stepped on the mat himself in the 1989 final against Mömbris-Königshofen, where he managed a shoulder victory. During his coaching career, he was the state coach for Rhineland-Palatinate, assistant coach at World and European Championships and on the coaching team at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney . His freestyle protégés won a total of 158 medals, including one Olympic medal, three medals at world championships and fifteen at European championships.
