from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Penchen Tenpe Nyima ( Tib . : pan chen bstan pa'i nyi ma ; * 1782 ; † 1853 ) was the fourth to receive the title Penchen Lama and is considered the seventh Penchen Lama of the Gelug tradition of Tibetan Buddhism .

Life

After Penchen Lobsang Pelden Yeshe died of smallpox in Beijing in 1780, the 10th Shamarpa wrote a letter to Warren Hastings in 1782 , informing him of the discovery of a new incarnation of the Penchen Lama.

In 1810 Tenpe Nyima gave the 9th Dalai Lama the Buddhist lay vows in the Potala Palace and called him "Lungtog Gyatsho".

After Lungtok Gyatsho died in 1815, eight years passed before a new Dalai Lama was selected. Eventually, Tenpe Nyima agreed to use the Golden Urn for the first time as part of the selection process for the new incarnation of the Dalai Lama . In 1822 the 10th Dalai Lama was chosen, who soon after received the Buddhist lay vows from Tenpe Nyima and named him " Tshälthrim Gyatsho ". In 1833 Tshälthrim Gyatsho received full ordination from Tenpe Nyima .

After Tshälthrim Gyatsho's death in 1837, Tenpe Nyima recognized a new Dalai Lama in 1842, gave him the Buddhist lay vows and named him " Khedrub Gyatsho ".

In 1844 Tenpe Nyima had a summer palace built for the Penchen Lamas about a kilometer south of Trashilhünpo .

In the same year it was apparently feared that the Penchen Lama was threatened with danger from the then regent (Tib .: sde srid ; Desi) in Lhasa Ngawang Jampel Tshälthrim Gyatsho (1792–1862 / 1864; was also 73. Ganden Thripa between 1837 and 1843 ), whereupon Tenpe Nyima set out for Eastern Tibet . To ensure a safe journey for him, monks from Sera Monastery kidnapped three ministers from the regent's government. This led to the declaration of a "national emergency" and Tenpe Nyima was invited to return from Tsang to Lhasa. In August 1844 he was appointed "Regent of Tibet". However, he handed over this office to the 3rd Reting Rinpoche Ngawang Yeshe Tshälthrim Gyeltshen in April 1845 .

In 1846 Tenpe Nyima gave full ordination to the 11th Dalai Lama.

Penchen Tenpe Nyima died in 1853 at the age of 71. Among the numerous written works by Tenpe Nyima, his encyclopedic work on sadhanas (Tib .: sgrub thabs ) and deities "Rinjung Lhantab" (Tib .: rin 'byung lhan thabs ) is particularly well known. In the text “The Clear Meaning of the Jewel Mine” the “Rinjung Gyatsa” of Taranatha with its three hundred practices is even expanded.
