Lobsang Chökyi Gyeltshen ( Tib . : blo bzang chos kyi rgyal mtshan ; * 1570 ; † 1662 ) was the first to receive the title of Penchen Lama from the 5th Dalai Lama Ngawang Lobsang Gyatsho . With the retrospective recognition of three other Penchen Lamas, he is also considered the 4th Penchen Lama of the Gelug tradition of Tibetan Buddhism .

Life

Lobsang Chökyi Gyeltshen was the tutor of the 5th Dalai Lama and many other well-known people of Tibetan Buddhism. The 5th Dalai Lama held his teacher so highly valued that he called him the emanation of Buddha Amitabha and awarded him the title of “Penchen Lama” ( Great Scholarly Guru ).

Lobsang Chökyi Gyeltshen received his first Buddhist vows from Sanggye Yeshe (1525–1590 / 1591) at the age of 13. At the age of 14 he began to study Buddhism in Trashilhünpo . At the age of 22 he received full ordination from Penchen Damchö Yarphel (* 16th century). At 30 he became the abbot of Trashi Lhünpo. At the age of 34 he gave monastic vows to the 4th Dalai Lama . In 1626 he became abbot of the "Changtse" (Tib .: byang rtse ) faculty of Ganden Monastery .

After Lobsang Chökyi Gyeltshen died in 1662 at the age of 93, the 5th Dalai Lama began the search for the reincarnation of the Penchen Lama. He wrote a special prayer in which he asked his teacher to return and instructed the monks of the Gelug monasteries to recite it. He also reserved the title "Penchen" (Sanskrit: Maha pandita ), which was originally used for other people of Tibetan Buddhism, exclusively for the "Penchen Lamas". The title was used in the future both for the successor of Lobsang Chökyi Gyeltshens, as well as for his predecessor, retrospectively to Khedrub Geleg Pelsang (1385-1438), the 3rd Ganden Thripa , who was also posthumously appointed 1st Penchen Lama.
