After a tropical cyclone hit Calcutta directly in 1864 and the famines of 1866 and 1871, when the monsoons did not materialize . the British colonial administration decided to set up a meteorological organization.
HF Blanford became the Government of India's first meteorological reporter, and in 1875 the weather service was installed. In May 1889 Sir John Eliot was appointed the first general director of the observatory in what was then the capital, Calcutta . The headquarters of the weather service was later relocated, first to Shimla , then to Pune and finally to New Delhi.
tasks
The IMD observes the weather, transmits the data, creates weather forecasts and performs other meteorological tasks. In cooperation with the Indian Space Research Organization , the IMD uses the Indian National Satellite System (INSAT) for weather observation on the Indian subcontinent. The IMD was the first weather service in a developing country to maintain its own geostationary satellite system.
The IMD is one of six Regional Specialized Meteorological Centers in the worldwide weather monitoring program of the World Meteorological Organization and is responsible for the forecast and documentation of tropical cyclones in the northern Indian Ocean . The cyclone activity includes the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal.
