The Meteorological Service of New Zealand , brand name MetService , is a state-owned company in New Zealand , based in Wellington . The company creates weather forecasts and provides meteorological data for various purposes for customers at home and abroad.

history

Weather observations began in New Zealand in the 1840s, but it only became a weather service when ship accidents increased off New Zealand's coasts. The government established the first weather service in 1861 and assigned it to the Marine Department first .

On September 1, 1926, the service was assigned to the newly established Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR) and called itself from then on New Zealand Meteorological Service . However, with the start of World War II , the service came under the control of the Royal New Zealand Air Force in 1939 . Through a cooperation with the USA , the weather service was now also given tasks outside the country's borders and even in 1964, when the service was assigned to the Department of Civil Aviation , the main focus of the weather service was still on supporting aviation . With the establishment of the Ministry of Transport in 1968, the meteorological service fell to the super ministry.

The wave of privatization in New Zealand in the 1980s did not pass the Meteorological Service by either. More independent economic activity, commercialization of services and expansion of services for cash were also on the agenda for the weather service. As part of this reorganization, in July 1992 the New Zealand Meteorological Service was reorganized under the State-Owned Enterprises Act 1986 into the Meteorological Service of New Zealand as a State-Owned Enterprise , but already on May 24, 1999 via StateOwned Enterprises (Meteorological Service of New Zealand Limited and Vehicle Testing New Zealand Limited) Amendment Act 1999 released from this status.
