Morten Qvenild (born August 31, 1978 in Kongsberg ) is a Norwegian jazz pianist . His stylistic diversity with influences from classical , pop music , rock and folk justify his participation in very different band projects on the Norwegian music scene.

biography

Morten Qvenild received his jazz education at the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo . At the turn of the millennium he played in the bands Østenfor Sol (with Ole Jørn My Klebust ), Shining and Jaga Jazzist , the jazz rock group around the brothers Lars and Martin Horntveth . In the latter, Qvenild played from 2000 to 2002, but then left the group to concentrate more on the project Susanna and the Magical Orchestra with Susanna Wallumrød . Here he represents the Magical Orchestra with a whole range of keyboard instruments and electronic aids . His own compositions and cover versions are interpreted in a fragile-looking pop garment that focuses on the essentials.

Since 2000 Qvenild has also been a member of the Slow Motion Quintet , in which he accompanies the singer Solveig Slettahjell together with Mats Eilertsen , Sjur Miljeteig and Per Oddvar Johansen . Performances at the JazzBaltica in Salzau in 2004 and 2006 also made him known to the German-speaking jazz audience. Together with two fellow students from the music academy, Roger Arntzen on bass and Pål Hausken on drums, Morten Qvenild founded the trio In the Country in 2003 , with which he has released three CDs so far. He is also a member of the band The National Bank , which arose in 2004 from a festival project around the Horntveth brothers. It also includes bassist Nikolai Eilertsen and singer and guitarist Thomas Dybdahl . Together with Gard Nilssen , he performed as sPacemoNkey at the Moers Festival in 2015 .

Awards

In 2007 Morten Qvenild was awarded the Vital Musician Prize at the Kongsberg Jazz Festival .
