Tao Hongjing ( Chinese  陶弘景 , Pinyin Táo Hóngjǐng , W.-G. T'ao Hung-ching ; * 456 in Jiankang ( 建康 , Jiànkāng ), historical Nanjing ; † 536 Mao Shan ) was a Chinese scholar and alchemist from the Period of the Six Dynasties . His major name is Tongming ( 通明 , Tōngmíng , T'ung-ming ), and he is also known under the pseudonym Huayang Yinju ( 華陽 隱居  /  华阳 隐居 , Huáyáng Yǐnjū , Hua-yang Yin-chü ). He served in various positions at the courts of Liu Song - and Qi - dynasties , before settling on the Maoshan withdrew. He was the ninth patriarch of the school of Shangqing - Daoism and one of its most important theorists.
