Eduard Schönfeld (born December 22, 1828 in Hildburghausen , † May 1, 1891 in Bonn ) was a German astronomer. He is often mentioned as assistant to FW Argelander in connection with the work of the “ Bonner Durchmusterung ” .

Life

Eduard Schönfeld was born on December 22nd, 1828 in Hildburghausen into a Jewish family. From Easter 1834 he attended the community school and the Nonesche Institute in Hildburghausen (until 1838) and the Israelite religious school in the same place until 1843. In 1838 he went to the humanistic grammar school in Hildburghausen.

In March 1847 he passed the Abitur and on July 24th he converted to the Protestant faith in Kassel . From 1848 to 1849 he studied construction at the Polytechnic School in Hanover . He was expelled from school in 1849 and continued to study polytechnics at the higher trade school in Kassel. He began in the fall to study at the University of Marburg : physics , chemistry , mineralogy , then astronomy at Christian Ludwig Gerling . November 29th first public observation at the Marburg observatory : entry of the star Gamma Arietis . Translation of the Theoria motus corporum coelestium by Carl Friedrich Gauß and the Méchanique céleste by Pierre-Simon Laplace .

In 1851 he traveled to Bonn to see Friedrich Wilhelm August Argelander . In 1852 he began studying astronomy with Argelander on April 23. Significant collaboration in the northern Bonn survey until its completion in 1868. In 1853 at Easter he became Argelander's assistant. In 1854 he graduated on August 9 in Bonn to Dr. phil. and in 1857 the habilitation follows on August 6th in Bonn.

In October 1859 he became professor and director of the observatory in Mannheim . In 1860 he married Helene Noeggerath on June 12th and in 1861 on July 6th his daughter Amalie was born.

In 1862 he published his publication Über die Nebelflecke and in 1863 on March 2nd the birth of his son Fritz took place. Beginning of the calibration journeys (until 1875). Start of the commitment to founding and developing the Astronomical Society . Publication About the Variable Stars . In 1864, on September 15, the daughter Anna was born and the publication About the Dark Fixed Star Companions followed . The catalog of variable stars followed in 1866, including the new stars 1st part and in 1874 the 2nd part.

In 1875 he became a full professor and director of the observatory in Bonn, succeeding Argelander .

1875: Beginning of the southern survey. Necrology on Argelander. Secretary and board member of the Astronomical Society. In 1881 the southern survey was completed. In 1886 the Bonn survey, southern part, was published .

In 1884 Schönfeld was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

In 1887 he was elected Corr. Member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences on February 20 . In 1887 and 1888 he was rector of the University of Bonn . He died on May 1, 1891 in Bonn .

The asteroid (5926) Schönfeld is dedicated to Eduard Schönfeld . A crater on the far side of the moon is also named after him.
