The 10.3 x 68 Magnum cartridge (also known as 10.3 x 68 Mag. ) Is a magnum cartridge that was introduced by RWS / RUAG in 2017 .

development

The caliber 10.3 x 68 Magnum is considered a further development of the 10.3 x 60 mm R (previously mainly used in Graubünden , Switzerland ) . The cartridge was developed by Peter Vonow and first presented by him as the .413 Vonow in 2015 at the IWA OutdoorClassics trade fair . The cartridge has been available from RWS since 2017.

The aim was to develop a cartridge that is suitable for hunting all European hoofed game as well as for hunting large African game. By specifying a caliber of 10.3 mm, it is approved in the Swiss canton of Graubünden , where a minimum caliber of 10.2 mm is required for hunting with bullet weapons.

In order to make it suitable for various game species, the cartridge is available with bullet weights between 13 g and 26 g. Due to the large cross-section of the bullet, the increased stopping effect should also develop advantages when hunting weaker game - such as roe deer , for example .

The classification of the cartridge by the European Cartridge Research Association (ECRA) was carried out under the designation: ECRA-ECDV 10 068 BFC 020 .

Others

The 10.3 x 68 Magnum cartridge and its justified basic need was discussed controversially in relevant Internet forums. As far as the criticism is technically justified, it mostly refers to the construction with a belt sleeve . The case is a new design that is currently only produced by RWS. Another background of criticism can also be aspects of economy, since the loads of the cartridge are rather expensive and the more cost-effective reloading of the cartridge also causes difficulties. Because other cartridges in the .413 / 10.3 mm caliber are common, reloaders can use different types of bullets. Reloaders rely on used cases from RWS. Cheaper third-party cores were not available in the 2010s. Because used cases can only be reused to a limited extent, the savings potential by reloading is limited with this cartridge.
