- Frankfurt am Main / Germany : The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) is turning away from the rules of spelling in accordance with their reform from 1996 and is again using the spellings it had used until the changeover in 1999. Your editors hope for "many imitators" among the publishers of printed matter.
- Leverkusen / Germany : Bayern Munich wins the fifth edition of the DFB League Cup . After the 5: 1 in the final against Hertha BSC , the title goes to Bayern for the fourth time in four years. The number of viewers is falling for the third year in a row.

- Philadelphia / United States : Texas Governor George W. Bush is nominated by the Republican Party as a candidate for the November presidential election. There was no other candidate, as the last remaining competitor, Alan Keyes withdrew his candidacy during the nomination party convention.

- Atlantic : The Atlantic hurricane season 2000 begins when the low pressure area of Alberto intensifies a few days after its formation from a tropical wave over Guinea into a tropical cyclone .

- Barents Sea : The Russian nuclear submarine K-141 Kursk sinks after water vapor and gaseous oxygen formed on board , with a crew of 118 men 180 km northeast of Murmansk .
Tuesday 15th August 2000
- Pyongyang / North Korea , Seoul / South Korea : For the first time in half a century, selected families from North and South Korea are allowed to visit. 100 people meet each other in Pyongyang and Seoul.

- Santo Domingo / Dominican Republic : Rafael Hipólito Mejía Domínguez becomes President.
Thursday 17th August 2000
- Bonn / Germany : The auction of licenses for mobile communications standard UMTS by the Regulatory Authority for Telecommunications and Post delivered 98.8 billion D-Mark . The money goes into the coffers of the Confederation . The new standard offers a data transfer rate of theoretically 42 Mbit / s .
- Los Angeles / United States : The Democratic Party nominates the Vice President of the United States Al Gore as its candidate for the presidential election in November . The decision is unanimous.
Sunday August 20, 2000
- Klettwitz / Germany : In the southern Brandenburg is Euro Speedway Lausitz opened. On this occasion, 80,000 visitors come to the new race track near the city of Senftenberg .
- Moscow / Russia : After a long debate, the Russian Orthodox Church canonize the last Tsar Nicholas II, emperor and autocrat of all Russians , his wife, his children and 1,100 other people . The criterion for canonization is that the persons died for their belief.
- Wirral / United Kingdom : The Dutch- British manufacturer of cosmetics and personal care products Unilever announces that it only pays bills in the United Kingdom in euros . A few days ago, the car manufacturer Toyota took the same step. The Financial Times sees it as an attack on Tony Blair's government , which is clinging to the pound sterling .

- Berlin / Germany : Representatives from Germany and Austria sign an agreement to avoid double taxation on income and wealth tax .

- New York , United States : 2,000 envoys from the world's leading faith communities gather at the invitation of the United Nations to discuss ways to peace on planet earth . The symposium will end on August 31st.
