- Paris / France : The country pays to Burundi a development assistance amounting to 440 million US dollars .
- Rome / Italy : The world football association FIFA selects the “World Footballer of the Century” at a gala. The Brazilian Edson Arantes do Nascimento, known as Pelé , won the vote of the football experts, while the Argentinian Diego Maradona won an internet vote by FIFA. This then actually only wanted to award Pele, which led Maradona to the statement: "I am the best."
